Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) owns the Be Kind Rewind Video and Thrift Shop, and Mike (Mos Def) is a clerk in the store that stocks only VHS cassettes. One day, Mr. Fletcher takes off to check out the competition and tells Mike that his friend Jerry (Jack Black) is not allowed in the store. But, Jerry does arrive and, without knowing it, erases all the store's tapes. (His brain had been magnetized the day before when he tried to sabotage a nearby power plant.) A store regular, Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow) comes in and threatens to tell on them if she cannot have a working copy of "Ghostbusters" by the end of the day. The solution to their problem: Mike and Jerry recreate films–including "Ghostbusters," "The Lion King," and "Back to the Future"–using themselves and neighbors as actors. The shop does a great business when the clients are thrilled with the remakes and ask for more.

The film received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Actress.

When things go bad for Stephane, he escapes into his dream world, and, in this film, members of the audience join him in escaping from their real lives.
