In this World War II drama, Sergeant John Reese (Steve McQueen) has been demoted because of his drinking and is sent back to his old squad, which is assigned to defend an area near a German pillbox. Reese persuades his squad leader Sgt. Larkin (Harry Guardino) to convince the Germans that the U.S. squad is much larger than it really is. Then, against orders, Reese leads two members of his squad in an attack on the pillbox. The attack fails, and the two men are killed, but Reese, despite being threatened with court martial, once again attacks the pillbox–this time alone. Reese is killed in his effort, but he has enabled the Allies to overtake the Germans.
