Fred (Adam Hann-Byrd) is a gifted child whose mother Dede (Jodie Foster) differs from his wealthy mentor Jane Grierson (Dianne Wiest) as to what is best for Fred's happiness. Fred is a fourth grader who has problems dealing with children his own age but excels with school work. Jane admires Fred's genius and invites him to attend her summer camp for child prodigies. While at camp, Fred misses Dede's love and support, and, by summer's end, Dede and Jane learn that Fred needs what both of them can offer him.
