  Based on Arlo Guthrie's satirical song about life in the mid-1960s, this film marks Guthrie's film debut. He plays the hero of the song whose good deed of taking Alice's trash to the dump comes back to haunt (and save) him when he is about to be inducted into the U.S. Army. Arthur Penn received an Oscar nomination for Best Director.
