  Based on Ethan Canin's short story, "The Palace Thief," this plot revolves around the once-stormy relationship between a Classics teacher and his young student. Today, more than 25 years later, the now-retired teacher, William Hundert (Kevin Kline) and the student, Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch), who is currently a CEO for a major corporation, reunite. Old problems rise to the surface.

  Successful playwright Nicky Rogan (Michael Keaton) is not having a good day: his wife, Lillian (Catherine O'Hara), is considering divorce; his aging father (Tom Aldredge) is in poor health; and Nicky is convinced that his autobiographical play, scheduled to open on Broadway that evening, is going to be panned by drama critic Steven Schwimmer (Robert Downey Jr.). But, even more important is the fact that his beloved Boston Red Sox are playing the Mets in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series and, despite Nicky's doubts, just might win their first World Series. After getting involved in a series of traffic jams and conversations with foreign cabbies, Nicky misses the opening of his play and sits in a bar watching his baseball team on TV and fearing the worst in all of his worlds.

Michael is sad, but Gabby's sisters Irenka (Sheila Kelley) and Simone (Ashley Greenfield) are eager to fill in for Gabby. Meanwhile, Gabby's father (Andre Gregory) walks around in the nude, and her grandmother (Lila Kedrova) mistakes Michael for her deceased husband. A bizarre holiday, for sure.
