In this updated version of P.C. Wren's adventure, Beau Geste (Guy Stockwell) sacrifices to protect his family's name and takes the rap for a crime that he did not commit. He leaves his home and joins the French Foreign Legion where he serves under the sadistic Sergeant-Major Dagineau (Telly Savalas). Later, Beau's brother John (Doug McClure) joins him, and the other soldiers become fed up with Dagineau's brutal methods and plot a mutiny. Beau quells the mutiny just before the Legionnaires are attacked by Arab forces. All the men, except Beau and Dagineau, are killed by the Arabs, and, after a fight to the death, Geste kills Dagineau and is the only survivor.

The story involves Eddie's match with Minnesota Fats and also covers his romance with alcoholic Sarah (Piper Laurie), his teaming up with backer Bert Gordon (George C. Scott), and the tragic trip to Louisville for a big match with Findlay (Murray Hamilton). Menawhile, Darlene has been taken hostage on "God's" yacht. And the wacky, weak film continues.
