  This film is based on one of Russian writer Anton Chekhov's greatest plays. Set in 1900 Russia, the story philosophizes about the fact that freeing the serfs has led to self-made businessmen while members of the aristocracy no longer can afford their accustomed lifestyles. Madame Ranyevskaya (Charlotte Rampling) is faced with a decision: sell the family's cherry orchard to a developer who will cut down all the trees–or risk losing everything.

  In this film rendition of Euripides' Greek classic, King Agamemmon (Kostas Kazakos), along with Helen's husband Menelaos, is leading the Greeks to Troy to rescue the kidnapped Helen. Because of a lack of wind, the thousand ships to be launched are unable to sail, and the soldiers need food. Agamemmon sends soldiers out to kill some deer, and, in the process slaughter the sacred deer. Now, Agamemmon must sacrifice his 12-year-old daughter Iphigenia (Tatiana Papamoschou) to appease the gods. Despite the pleas of Iphigenia's mother Clytemnestre (Irene Papas), the sacrifice is carried out. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film.

Lila Kedrova won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and nominations included Best Picture, Actor (Quinn), and Director.
