In this remake of the 1955 film, Richard Chamberlain takes the role of the bogus preacher, Harry Powell, who is determined to get his hands on $50,000 that was stolen and hidden by his old prison cellmate. He befriends the widow (Diana Scarwid), kills her, and pursues her children (Amy Bebout an Reid Binion) through the woods believing that they, and only they, know where the money is hidden.
