Although branded as "Communist propaganda" when it was first released in the U.S., this film was acclaimed in Europe. In fact, director Biberman had served five months in prison for not cooperating with the House Un-American Activities Committee and wanted to give work to those blacklisted by the entertainment industry. The story revolves around a strike against a New Mexico zinc mine. When the strikers are forced to leave the picket line, their wives take up the cause–standing up not only to mine officials but to their husbands as well.
