  When they were young, Boris (Alfred Molina) and Betty (Brenda Blethyn) were in love, but Betty married Hugh (Robert Pugh) who is now the town mayor and is also carrying on an affair with his secretary, Meredith (Naomi Watts). When her mother-in-law dies, Betty deals with the local undertaker who just happens to be Boris. Past emotions rise to the fore resulting in a plot to fake Betty's death and allow her to run away with Boris.
