Ranch foreman Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones) believes that Border Patrolman Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) has killed his best friend, Melquiades Estrada. In the meantime, the body was buried in the west Texas desert, was found, and once again buried in the town cemetery. Pete kidnaps Norton and forces him to dig up the body and then help him bring the corpse across the border into Mexico to be buried in his hometown.
