Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) owns the Be Kind Rewind Video and Thrift Shop, and Mike (Mos Def) is a clerk in the store that stocks only VHS cassettes. One day, Mr. Fletcher takes off to check out the competition and tells Mike that his friend Jerry (Jack Black) is not allowed in the store. But, Jerry does arrive and, without knowing it, erases all the store's tapes. (His brain had been magnetized the day before when he tried to sabotage a nearby power plant.) A store regular, Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow) comes in and threatens to tell on them if she cannot have a working copy of "Ghostbusters" by the end of the day. The solution to their problem: Mike and Jerry recreate films–including "Ghostbusters," "The Lion King," and "Back to the Future"–using themselves and neighbors as actors. The shop does a great business when the clients are thrilled with the remakes and ask for more.

The boys become friends and, together, pursue their dream of becoming Reggaeton stars. To that end, they join with dancer Carol "CC" Reyes (Zulay Henao). "CC" connects them with music producer Jeffrey Skyler (James McCaffrey) who offers them a trip to New York to cut an album. The trip proves to be a failure–until Rob's dad steps in with his friend, superstar Voltio (Julio Ramos), and the boys see hope in fulfilling their dream.

Now a successful L.A. writer, Dito returns home to Astoria, Queens, NY, where he grew up in the mid-1980s amidst violence and drugs and left for what he believed would be a better world outside. Dito faces those who influenced his life, and the story unfolds of how Dito believes he has been saved from their fate by his saints.

Meanwhile, things at home are not great either–Dana's unhappy wife Brie (Catherine Keener) and their boarder Gary (David Arquette) make his life difficult. In an effort to save the drama department, Dana comes up with an idea to put on a musical sequel to "Hamlet," and, almost immediately, complaints roll in from the citizens of Tucson and school officials about the play's contents. But, the show must go on.

When Victor falls in love with Judy (Judy Marte) who, in turn, shows no interest in Victor, he comes up with a plan: get Judy's brother, Carlos (Wilfree Vasquez), to help set him up with Judy and agree to set Carlos up with his own sister, Vickie.
