During the Civil War, wounded Union soldier John McBurney (Clint Eastwood) recuperates in a Confederate women's finishing school that is run by Martha Farnsworth (Geraldine Page). The women are attracted to John, and he takes advantage of them by having sex with them and then dropping each one.
