Chicago businessman Martin Harvey (Martin Short) inherits his uncle's yacht. He takes the whole family to the Caribbean where he hires on Captain Ron (Kurt Russell) to sail the boat to Florida. Captain Ron turns out to be a sailor who has no "sea legs." Not exactly one of Russell's good efforts.

Carol, with her traditional values, has her problems coping with Jessica's behavior and with the arrival of young, charismatic James, an African-American, who seeks work. Matters are made more complicated by mortgage foreclosure threats and a wild daughter.
