David Niven won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Major Pollock who helps Sybil (Deborah Kerr) break away from her cruel mother. Wendy Hiller won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of the inn's owner. Five other nominations included Best Picture and Actress (Kerr).
