  Clever detective Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his faithful cohort, Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce), are trying to foil an attempt by Professor Moriarty (George Zucco) to steal England's Crown Jewels. When Moriarty sends a death threat to socialite Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino), Holmes and Watson are sidetracked while Moriarty goes on with his plot to steal the jewels. Now, Holmes and Watson must split up to prevent murder as well as the theft.

  Tough private investigator Michael Shayne (Lloyd Nolan) is preparing to marry showgirl Joanne La Mar (Mary Beth Hughes) when he becomes involved in investigating a string of theatrical murders that are all linked to the same play that had been produced 25 years earlier. All of the victims were wearing costumes from the play when their bodies were discovered. Using a souvenir program, Nolan uncovers clues leading to the murderer and solves the case. But, Joanne is fed up with the time he spends on investigations and leaves him.

  This is a good rendition of Elizabeth von Arnim's novel about two English women–Lottie Wilkins (Ann Harding) and Rose Arbuthnot (Katherine Alexander)–who have had enough of their husbands and take off for a vacation and a better life. They rent a castle overlooking the Mediterranean in San Salvatore, Italy. Joining them in Italy are Mrs. Fisher (Jessie Ralph) and Lady Caroline (Jane Baxter). Now, the four ladies spend their month together supposedly free from their husbands–but not without complications. Remade in 1992.
