  When golden retriever Bailey (voice of Jon Lovitz) inherits the entire billion-dollar estate of his owner, Constance Pennington (Jackie Burroughs), two family members–nephew Caspar (Tim Curry) and his wife Dolores (Jennifer Tilly)–set out to prove that Bailey's guardian, Ted (Dean Cain), is abusing Bailey. With this "proof," maybe Caspar and Dolores will be able to get their hands on the fortune.

When the drama teacher, Miss Dodger (Patricia Clarkson), offers Phoebe a role in the school production of "Alice in Wonderland," Phoebe is thrilled and accepts the role of "Alice." Rehearsals begin, but problems ensue when Phoebe slips away from reality and sees the play's characters leading her through a magical maze of life, which could lead to her downfall.

Mentally challenged John Givings (Michael Shannon) appears to the only one to understand the Wheelers' problem. The film received three Academy Award nominations including Shannon for Best Supporting Actor.
