  Petula (Rachel Weisz) and Dorothy (Susan Lynch) share in their poor judgment of men, which becomes clear when Tony (Iain Glen) throws paint at Dorothy when she leaves him and Brian (Tom Mannion) tries to strangle Petula for even less reason. But Dorothy manages to save Petula by heaving a heavy pipe across Brian's head. Brian later dies, and the women are faced with the problem of hiding a corpse. The solution: cut off Brian's finger and send it with a ransom note.

Not wanting to live entirely off his loving wife's (Joanne Whalley) income, he finds a job as a participant in the brutal sport of bare-knuckle boxing.

Found by a princess, he is raised in luxury, but his destiny is to lead his people out of Egypt to the promised land.

  There are some good moments in this adaptation of James Joyce's masterpiece concerning Leopold and Molly Bloom's (Milo O'Shea and Barbara Jefford) streams of consciousness. The story takes place over a 24-hour period when impotent Leopold meets a young poet, Stephen Dedalus (Maurice Roeves). They visit a brothel, and sit up all night talking. After Stephen leaves, Molly, who is unhappy with Leopold, fantasizes about a possible affair with Stephen. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
