  A murdered mobster, Eddie Kagle (Paul Muni), goes to Hell and makes a deal with The Devil, Nick (Claude Rains), to come back to life. The deal is for Eddie to take over the body of respected Judge Fred Parker and perform bad deeds. To Nick's dismay, Eddie only performs good deeds, and, when he falls for the judge's fiance Barbara Foster (Anne Baxter), he tries to break his deal with Nick. Nick takes Eddie back to Hell after promising Eddie that he will leave the judge and Barbara alone.

  This is one of the best in the long line of Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) films. Gravelle (Boris Karloff) was an opera star who, suffering from amnesia following a fire, has spent his last seven years in an asylum. When Gravelle sees a picture of his unfaithful, opera singer wife Lucretia (Nedda Harrigan) in a newspaper story, his memory returns, and he heads to the opera house to seek revenge. Murders ensue, and Chan investigates.
