A murdered mobster, Eddie Kagle (Paul Muni), goes to Hell and makes a deal with The Devil, Nick (Claude Rains), to come back to life. To Nick's dismay, Eddie only performs good deeds, and, when he falls for the judge's fiance Barbara Foster (Anne Baxter), he tries to break his deal with Nick. Nick takes Eddie back to Hell after promising Eddie that he will leave the judge and Barbara alone.
