  Based on an Erich Segal novel, this film revolves around English professor Bob Beckwith's (Martin Sheen) discovery that he is the father of newly orphaned Jean-Claude (Sebastian Dungan). Years before, Bob had an affair with Nicole (Nathalie Nell) in France, and unbeknownst to him she became pregnant and had a baby. Now, Nicole has died. Bob's wife Sheila (Blythe Danner) suggests that they bring Jean-Claude home for a visit, and that visit causes a variety of effects on Bob, Sheila, and their daughters Jessica and Paula (Arlene McIntyre and Missy Francis).
