When a wealthy American diplomat (Rudolph Christians) arrives in Monaco, the blackmail con begins via the diplomat's naive wife (Miss DuPont).

  Talented operatic student Toni (Corinne Griffith) leaves her aunt and uncle's home and heads to Budapest after receiving a job offer. Finding out that this job is no more than a high-priced girlie show, she is distraught until taken under the wing of a wardrobe assistant, Rosa (Louise Dresser), who is more than she appears to be. Rosa invites Toni to accompany her to Monte Carlo, and the adventures begin in this fun, elaborate silent film, which was "lost" for many years.

  This is one of the best of all versions of "Madame X," the sad story in which the heroine (Pauline Frederick) becomes pregnant and is forced to give up her son. Years later, she returns and kills a man who is intending to blackmail her husband (William Courtleigh). In the subsequent trial, her attorney is her own son (Casson Ferguson)–neither knows of their relationship.

  Director Erich von Stroheim was fired from Universal Studios before the conclusion of this film, but it still reflects his touches even though it was finished by Rupert Julian. Count Franz Maxmillian von Hohenegg (Norman Kerry) is scheduled to be wed to a countess but falls in love with an organ grinder, Agnes (Mary Philbin). He goes through with the wedding anyway, heads off to war, is chastised by a dying Sylvester (Cesare Gravina)–Agnes' father–returns from the war a widower, and determines to make amends to Agnes.
