Another sister, Christine (Sean Young), is separated from her husband Paul (Jamey Sheridan) and has a boyfriend Lawrence (Mark Harmon) but really wants to become a professional singer. The third sister, Dolores (Lily Knight), is mentally challenged and lives with their mother, Dolly (Cloris Leachman). Larry Valentine (Kevin James) is a widower working as a New York City firefighter when he is told that only a spouse can claim life insurance benefits. This leaves his children out in the cold. As a solution, Larry and his fellow firefighter Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler), who just happens to be a womanizer, take part in a mock marriage to beat the system. After the fire department sends an inspector (Steve Buscemi) to investigate the "marriage," Chuck and Larry hire a lawyer, Alex McDonough (Jessica Biel). Alex believes their story and recommends that they go to Canada where they can be legally wed because in Canada gay marriage is legal. And, of course, gay jokes prevail throughout the film.

In this "Nightmare" movie, actors from previous "Freddy Krueger" films return for more slashing. Of special note, Robert Englund appears as himself, opposing his old character, Freddy. Heather Langenkamp (played by herself) is the actress who played the heroine Nancy in the first "Nightmare" film and is still haunted by the old Freddy dreams. When Heather learns that Wes Craven is writing one more "Nightmare" film, she realizes that Freddy is now part of the real world and that her son Dylan (Miko Hughes) is being taken over by Freddy. Heather believes that the only way to put an end to Freddy is to, once again, take on the role of Nancy.
