This film begins with pregnant 17-year-old Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman) being abandoned by her boyfriend in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, at a Wal-Mart store. She decides to secretly camp out at Wal-Mart. The plan works, until she goes into labor. Rushed to the hospital, Novalee attains celebrity status, a job, a family, and friends–and a small amount of maturity. Well, it's a start!
