Loosely based on a true story during the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930s, this film involves the adventures of British journalist George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who slips into China during the Japanese occupation. After photographing evidence of mass slaughters of civilians by the Japanese, he barely escapes. Chinese communist resistance leader "Jack" Chen Hansheng (Chow Yun-Fat) and American nurse Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell) save him and convince Hogg to recuperate at the Huang Shi orphanage where he ends up helping to care for 60 starving young boys who were orphaned by the war. When Hogg learns that the Japanese plan to force the boys into the army, he leads them on a 700-mile trek across the desert and to their ultimate safety.
