James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has just graduated from college and learns that he must give up a planned trip to Europe because his parents (Jack Gilpin and Wendie Malick) are hit with the 1987 recession and cannot afford the trip. Instead, James finds work at a local amusement park, Adventureland, in an effort to save money for grad school. Life isn't great, until James makes friends with co-workers Joel (Martin Starr) and Mike (Ryan Reynolds). But the one who really makes a difference in James' life is another co-worker Em Lewin (Kristen Stewart) with whom he falls in love. Now life is looking much better.

Sixteen-year-old Dylan (Michael Angarano) is dying, and when "United Wish Givers" grants him a wish, he reveals during a televised news conference that he wishes to spend a weekend with supermodel Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey). A photo-op is scheduled, and during the shoot Nikki tells Dylan to call if he ever comes to New York. It doesn't take long before Dylan and friends Ricky (Matt Bush) and Slap (Gideon Glick) set off on a series of misadventures during a trip to the Big Apple where Dylan hopes to cross paths with Nikki.
