He does his investigating at night, posing as Mexican bandit El Capitan in order to solve the murder, which he does, bringing Lafe to justice. Meanwhile, he wins the affections of a rancher's daughter, Mary Lou Moran (Sally Eilers–Hoot Gibson's wife at the time).

The island is filled with animals of all sorts, as well as another group of men looking for gold. Before story's end, Sharkey proves to be on the wrong side, and Ruth is found.
