But, as Kiochi plots revenge against Iwabuchi, Kiochi falls in love with Kieko just as Iwabuchi realizes who Kiochi really is.

At the end, it is impossible to tell who told the true story because each person saw it from only one point of view. The film was presented an Honorary Academy Award (for 1951) as Best Foreign Film.

Both decide to pursue their dreams: Genjuro heads to the city to get rich and is taken in by a noblewoman, and Tobei becomes a samurai warrior. The wives, who were left behind, have their own dreams. The sights, sounds, and mix of fantasy and realism combine to make this a an excellent film.
