Paul Scofield stands out as Judge Danforth who is determined to rid evil from Salem, and Winona Ryder is very convincing as Abigail Williams who deceives, lies, and wreaks havoc in order to steal her ex-lover who is the husband (Daniel Day-Lewis) of hated rival Elizabeth Proctor (Joan Allen).

Though the commune leaders don't care much for Havana, she and Peter marry to satisfy the leaders. Peter is soon killed in an auto accident, and, according to the commune's laws, Havana must marry her husband's brother, 12-year-old Ezekiel (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Matters continue to go downhill as Havana searches for the loot while Ezekiel knows its location, and the FBI agent on her trail also looks for it.

As a solution, Larry and his fellow firefighter Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler), who just happens to be a womanizer, take part in a mock marriage to beat the system. After the fire department sends an inspector (Steve Buscemi) to investigate the "marriage," Chuck and Larry hire a lawyer, Alex McDonough (Jessica Biel). Alex believes their story and recommends that they go to Canada where they can be legally wed because in Canada gay marriage is legal. And, of course, gay jokes prevail throughout the film.

This film is based on the 1942 Italian movie, "Four Steps in the Clouds." This time around, the story is set in California's Napa Valley in 1945. Keanu Reeves plays a World War II veteran, Paul Sutton, who poses as the husband of unwed, pregnant Victoria (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). Victoria's father is Mexican-American winegrower Alberto Albertini (Giancarlo Giannini) who does not trust Paul even though her grandfather Don Pedro (Anthony Quinn) accepts him. Paul believes that if he sticks around for a few days and then leaves, he will be the bad one, and Alberto will vent his wrath on him instead of Victoria.
