Riders of the Purple Sage   1941     2 stars    N/R, 58 min.
Genre: Western
Director: James Tinling
Cast: George Montgomery, Mary Howard, Robert Barrat, Lynne Roberts, Kane Richmond, Patsy Patterson, Richard Lane, Oscar O'Shea, LeRoy Mason, Frank McGrath

This telling of the Zane Grey story, again without the novel's religious undertones, has Jim Lassiter (George Montgomery) showing up to help his niece, who is being cheated out of her inheritance by a crooked judge (Robert Barrat). The judge also heads a vigilante group that is, in reality, a thieving and murdering group trying to get the settlers out of the area.

aka: The Man Who Came Back

Director: Jean Renoir
Cast: Walter Brennan, Walter Huston, Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Virginia Gilmore, John Carradine, Mary Howard, Eugene Pallette, Ward Bond, Guinn "Big Boy" Williams

Tom (Walter Brennan) is wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to death, but he escapes and hides in the Okefenokee Swamp, determined to clear himself. He is discovered by a hunter (Dana Andrews), who helps in the effort to clear Tom. Brennan played the same role in a 1952 remake, "Lure of the Wilderness," a rarity in casting.    1 User Review
