This film does a good, though biased, job of relating people's emotions over the Vietnam War. It tells the story of U.S. Marine Corps Captain Bob Hyde (Bruce Dern) and his wife Sally's (Jane Fonda) affair with paraplegic war veteran Luke Martin (John Voight). Jane Fonda and Jon Voight won Academy Awards for Best Actress and Actor. An Oscar was also awarded for Best Screenplay, and five nominations were received, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Dern) and Actress (Penelope Milford as Sally's troubled friend Vi).

After all those years, the crew of the Minnow is rescued after the Professor (Russell Johnson) uses part of a barometer from a Russian satellite that had crashed on the island. The barometer indicates that a huge wave will sweep the island, so Gilligan (Bob Denver) and crew prepare to ride it off the island and out to sea. The plan works, after a rescue by a Navy helicopter, and they arrive in Hawaii. Civilization has changed, and it is not easy to adjust–especially with those Russian spies looking for the barometer.
