Dito Montiel's autobiographical story begins in the present when his suffering mother (Dianne Wiest) calls him to come home because his father (Chazz Palminteri) is dying. Dito faces those who influenced his life, and the story unfolds of how Dito believes he has been saved from their fate by his saints.
