In the mid-80s, East German Secret Police agent Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) is assigned to spy on Dreyman and Sieland. In the process of his observations, the hard-nosed Wiesler becomes fascinated with the couple and turns into an anti-establishment figure himself. By story's end it is 1991, and the Berlin Wall has fallen allowing for a reunited Germany. An Oscar was received for Best Foreign Language film.
