James almost immediately falls in love with Sarah, but she resists his advances. When James meets Sarah's mother (Piper Laurie) she tells him that Sarah was sexually molested as a teenager, and that contributes to her wariness of his attentions. Now, James understands and finds new ways to communicate with Sarah–which leads to the love affair that develops between them. Matlin won the Oscar for Best Actress, and nominations were also received for Best Actor (Hurt), Picture, Supporting Actress (Laurie), and Writing.
