  A case of mistaken identity brings together ex-surfer, now-bowler Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) and a pompous millionaire, Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski (David Huddleston), whose wife Bunny (Tara Reid) owes money to Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazzara). When Treehorn hires thugs to retrieve the money, they break into "The Dude's" house by mistake. Later, they kidnap Bunny, and "The Dude" agrees to help by delivering the $1 million ransom–and finds himself in the midst of the Los Angeles underworld and part of the schemes of the daughter of "The Big" Lebowski, Maude (Julianne Moore).

  In 1959, Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his good friend, author Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), traveled to Holcomb, Kansas, to get background information for Capote's book, "In Cold Blood." This is the story of that journey and of the relationship Capote formed with one of the killers, Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.). Hoffman won an Academy Award for Best Actor. The film received four other nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actress (Catherine Keener).

As Walter reads the book, Agatha experiences growing concerns over what the book is doing to him and asks her friend Dr. Isaac French (also Huston) for help. But Walter believes there is more to the book and the number 23 than meets the eye and sets out to get to the bottom of the mystery.
