  Comedian Lance Barton (Chris Rock) is hit by a truck and, only after reaching Heaven, learns that he was not supposed to die this early. Angels offer him a second chance at life on Earth, but he must return in the body of wealthy, White, elderly Charles Wellington whose wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and personal aide (Greg Germann) have just murdered him. Lance's soul is placed in Charles Wellington's body. When Lance meets Sontee (Regina King), he falls in love, but he must still deal with Wellington's wife and aide and their plot to murder him once again. Will they stop Lance from achieving his dream of performing at the Apollo Theater?

The foursome takes off for an all-expense-paid vacation to Rock Vegas–arranged for by conniving Chip (Thomas Gibson) who has his eye on Wilma.

William wins and with help from friends, Wat and Roland (Alan Tudyk and Mark Addy) along with aspiring writer Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), he continues his deception and wins match after match. He even beats the undefeated Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) and gains the affection of Lady Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon). But, how long will it take before William's deception is exposed?
