Following World War II, Karin (Ingrid Bergman) marries a fisherman and moves to the volcanic island of Stromboli where she struggles to adapt to her new culture in the remote corner of the world. There's also a shorter (by about 25 minutes) version out there. While it's unusual to say this about Rossellini and Bergman, if you really want to see it, take the shorter one–you won't have to suffer as long.
