  While vacationing in Rome, American actress Anita (Goldie Hawn) falls in love with a banker, Guido Massacesi (Giancarlo Giannini). Guido is on his way to Tuscany to visit his ailing father and invites Anita to join him. Unaware that Guido is married, Anita agrees to go off on the trip. Guido's father dies before Guido and Anita reach Tuscany, and during the funeral, family members gather to honor their deceased patriarch and end up in the midst of petty arguments.
