Down-on-his-luck Alaskan travel agent Paul Barnell (Robin Williams) spots a corpse in the dumpster behind his office and comes up with a scheme in which he will claim that the corpse is his brother and collect on the million-dollar insurance policy. But Paul's plan contains more than a few problems that involve convincing insurance agent Ted (Giovanni Ribisi) of his story, evading two hit men (Blake Nelson and W. Earl Brown) who want the corpse, and then there is the reappearance of his not-dead brother, Raymond (Woody Harrelson).

In 1959, Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his good friend, author Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), traveled to Holcomb, Kansas, to get background information for Capote's book, "In Cold Blood." This is the story of that journey and of the relationship Capote formed with one of the killers, Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.). Hoffman won an Academy Award for Best Actor. The film received four other nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actress (Catherine Keener).
