Based on Thomas Hardy's novel, "The Mayor of Castorbridge," about a wealthy 49er, this story is set in the Sierra Nevadas where the landscape is breathtaking. The plot reveals the life choices of Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) who sold his wife and daughter in order to obtain a gold mine. Now, the wife (Nastassja Kinski) and daughter (Sarah Polley) reappear in his life, and Dillon must face the impact of his earlier decisions.
