After his mother dies, Wade's brother Rolfe (Willem Dafoe) comes home to pay his respects, and now Wade suspects Rolfe of being involved in the criminal world. James Coburn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and Nick Nolte was nominated for Best Actor.

Tarek's mother Mouna (Hiam Abbass) arrives in the city looking for her son, and romance also enters Walter's world. Cultural differences have fallen by the wayside. Jenkins received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
