A twist of fate occurs when Nathan goes to buy the shoes and runs into frustrated attorney Robert Layton (Rob Lowe)–whose wife, Kate (Maria del Mar), is taking over Maggie's music teaching job–and by story's end, Robert has learned the true meaning of Christmas.
