As he plays one family against the other, "Joe" stays awhile and leaves a more peaceful town. The film spawned two sequels: "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia are featured in "The Jar"–a story about a craftsman (Ingrassia) who gets trapped inside a jar that he is repairing. In Requiem," villagers oppose a feudal landlord, the Baron (Pasquale Spadola). The epilogue, "Conversing with Mother," involves a son (Omero Anonutti) who talks to the spirit of his deceased mother (Regina Bianchi).

When Don Jaime realizes that Viridiana closely resembles his wife who had died years ago on their wedding night, he drugs Viridiana and tries to rape her. Later, Don Jaime confesses but then hangs himself. Viridiana inherits his estate and invites homeless beggars to the estate for food and comfort. Her plans go awry when the beggars stage an orgy, which proves to be a pivotal point in Viridiana's life, and she finds that she must make choices.
