In the meantime, gambling, an extramarital affair, and divorce play roles in their lives, and events lead to the kidnapping of Isabel and her daughter Judy (Janet Chapman). The kidnapping culminates in Isabel jumping out of the window to her death. The police rescue Judy, and at the next reunion Fay and Connie are joined by Judy who takes Isabel's place.

  James Cagney plays a good guy is this movie, which is perhaps William Keighley's best directing job. The plot follows the adventures of James "Brick" Davis (Cagney), a lawyer whose education was financed by crime boss "Mack" McKay (William Harrigan). Brick's roommate Eddie (Regis Toomey) becomes an F.B.I. agent but is later killed by gangster Danny Leggett (Edward Pawley) in a gang shooting. Now, Brick joins the F.B.I. as an agent where he is looked upon with suspicion because of his background ties to McKay. Nevertheless, Brick sets out to avenge the death of Eddie and follows a trail of murders that extends from New York to the Midwest. Based on Gregory Miller's book "Public Enemy No. 1."

  An amateur painter, Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson), is also the henpecked husband of Adele (Rosalind Ivan). Kitty persuades Cross to embezzle money to pay for her apartment. Meanwhile, what Cross does not know is that Kitty's lover is con man Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea), and he is removing Cross' name from the paintings and replacing them with Kitty's name. Now the art work proves successful, and Johnny claims they are Kitty's and makes money off of them. Cross finally catches on, kills Kitty, and then suffers a mental breakdown. This is a remake of Jean Renoir's classic "La Chienne."

  This is a good retelling of Rex Beach's novel, "The Spoilers." Roy Glennister (John Wayne) arrives in Alaska with Helen Chester (Margaret Lindsay) and is greeted by saloon owner Cherry Malotte (Marlene Dietrich) who has staked Flapjack (Russell Simpson) as a partner in Glennister's mine. Problems rise to the fore when the gold commissioner, Alexander McNamara (Randolph Scott), conspires to take over the rights to the mines in the area. A legal fight appears to be impossible, and the result is a bar-room brawl in which Glennister and McNamara fight for the rights to the mine.

Meanwhile, head nurse Rachel Coleman (Margaret Lindsay) and Bentley become romantically involved. By story's end, Tammy saves Annie's life, Rachel and Dr. Wayne get together, and Tammy and Dr. Mark find love and hope for a future together. This film marks Fonda's film debut.
