  Eddie "Fingers" Coyle (Robert Mitchum) is a small-time hood who becomes an informer as the means of escaping a life sentence in prison. When the mob learns that Eddie is informing on his cohorts, they send Eddie's friend Dillon (Peter Boyle) on a mission to kill Eddie. After spending a night on the town together, Dillon plans to take Eddie's life. This is a powerful film, which is realistic in depicting the world of the underworld.

  This film is worth seeing just to enjoy the performances of Bette Davis and Lillian Gish together in the same film. The story takes place on an island off of Maine and revolves around two aging sisters who face their own mortality. Ann Sothern was nominated for an Oscar for Supporting Actress.
