It turns out that the townsfolk live near a toxic waste dump, which has turned most residents into zombies. Getting Mike back may be difficult.

When Laird arrives in town, he meets the deceased soldier's parents, Luther and Ada Johnson (Morgan Freeman and CCH Pounder) and learns that he must deal with racial tension when it is recognized that the Black lieutenant is slated to be buried in a White cemetery.
