Disillusioned, television journalist David Locke (Jack Nicholson) is on location in the Sahara Desert. He learns that the man in the hotel room next to his has died, and, looking for a "better" life, David takes the dead man's passport and assumes his identity. Now, David keeps the dead man's appointments and uncovers smuggling plots involving a terrorist group. Along the way, David finds companionship with a mysterious woman (Maria Schneider) who is also disillusioned with life.
