  As Ann Lord (Vanessa Redgrave) lies in bed dying, she drifts in and out of sleep while being nursed by Mrs. Brown (Eileen Atkins) who is giving her morphine to relieve the pain. While sleeping, Ann goes back in time to when she was a young Ann (Claire Danes) attending the Newport, Rhode Island, wedding of her good friend Lila Wittenborn (Mamie Gummer). At that long-ago reception, Ann meets Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson), and her love for him will change her life forever. Now, in her dying moments, she keeps mumbling the words "mistakes" and "Harris" leaving her daughters (Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson) wondering what their mother is really talking about.

  This film is based on Nora Ephron's autobiographical novel about her marriage and divorce from Washington Post columnist Carl Bernstein. Rachel (Meryl Streep) is a New York food editor, and Mark (Jack Nicholson) is a Washington, D.C. political columnist who she meets at a wedding. They marry, and Rachel quits her job in New York to move to Washington. Soon, they have a baby, and then another is on the way. Life is good–until pregnant Rachel learns that Mark is having an affair, and the marriage ends in divorce.

  Sgt. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) and his squad fight the war in Iraq, and now Brandon and his hometown group–Sgt. Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum), PFC Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and Isaac "Eyeball" Butler (Rob Brown)–are returning to Brazos, Texas. But, they do not leave the war behind and have problems settling back into the civilian world. It is time for Brandon to be discharged when he learns that he has been reenlisted as part of the "stop-loss" program to protect national security. Brandon does not want to return to war and, instead, goes AWOL. With Steve's girlfriend Michelle (Abbie Cornish) at the wheel, Brandon and Michelle set out for Washington, D.C., so that Brandon can make a plea to Senator Orton Worrell (Josef Sommer). Along the way, Brandon makes his choice between duty to country and his own sanity.
