This film is based on the true story of Jewish refugees–including countess Denise (Faye Dunaway) and her husband Professor Egon Kreisler (Oscar Werner) and disbarred attorney Carl Rosen (Sam Wanamaker), his wife Lili (Lee Grant), and daughter Anna (Lynne Frederick). In 1939, they and other passengers sail from Europe looking for freedom. Their ship is not allowed to dock in ports in the Western Hemisphere, and the voyage proves fruitless when they are forced to return to Germany. Lee Grant received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Now here's a bizarre film. A psychiatrist, Dr. Ian Lazarre (John Savage), sinks into depression and drinking after his wife's death in an alcohol-related car accident, though he has remarried to a woman who looks just like his dead wife. He is talked into going to a rehab center that specializes in using experimental drugs. But the head of the institution, Dr. Renquist (Malcolm McDowell), is out to get Ian; in fact, Renquist murdered Ian's first wife–and staged the car accident–out of jealousy and now intends to take care of Ian.
