Haunted by guilt, using the credentials of an IRS auditor, Ben Thomas (Will Smith) interviews seven people whose lives are in danger and sets out to help them. One of the people Ben tries to help is Emily (Rosario Dawson), an artist in need of a heart transplant. Emily and Ben fall in love, but Emily has no idea about the other six people–including blind telemarketer Ezra (Woody Harrelson), abused mother Connie (Elpidia Carrillo), and Ben's own brother (Michael Ealy) to whom he donates his kidney–who are on Ben's list of those he wants to help.
