  After Paul's (Douglas Walton) arrest for murder, his sister Pamela Ward (Drue Leyton) calls in Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) to solve the crime and free her brother. Chan heads for Geoffrey Raymond's (Alan Mowbray) country estate where the murder occurred. He has only 65 hours to expose the real murderer before Paul is scheduled to be executed.

  Monsieur Charles Beaumont (Robert Frazer) is the wealthy owner of an island, and he uses zombies led by "Murder" Legendre (Bela Lugosi) to control his world. Charles convinces Madeleine (Madge Bellamy) and Neil (John Harron) to get married on his plantation. Then, Charles gets Legendre to turn Madeleine into a zombie. Using Madeleine as a hold over Charles, Legendre refuses to release her soul. A grieving Neil, with help from missionary Dr. Bruner (Joseph Cawthorn), searches for and rescues Madeleine from a Living Death.
